SCOTS comic Janey Godley has thanked everyone sending her support after an “utterly despicable” Scottish Tory attack aimed at her.

Douglas Ross’s party had put on Twitter a mock “contract” for someone to star in a public health campaign.

“The First Minister chose to make her nationalist friend the face of a crucial public health campaign despite admitting she was seen as a partisan political figure,” the party wrote.

“When will @NicolaSturgeon apologise for this irresponsible decision?”

The reference was to Godley’s previous appearances in a Scottish Government Covid-19 public health campaign, for which she was paid £10,000.

Godley was pulled from the campaign in September 2021 after past tweets she had sent resurfaced, for which she apologised unreservedly.

The timing of the Scottish Tories’ attack did not go unnoticed, given how Godley has publicly been battling cancer.

“The person you are referring to is currently receiving treatment for a serious illness. This tweet is misjudged, ill timed and very unkind,” the SNP’s Ross Colquhoun wrote.

“This is beyond the pale. The woman is extraordinarily unwell and just started a battle with chemo…. This is so low even for you lot,” Rosa Zambonini added.

Comedian Geoff Norcott wrote: “Maybe you didn't know, but that person is currently very unwell and she could do without a revival of this story at the moment.”

A tweet frequently reshared beneath the Scottish Tories’ post – and written by a Robert Cameron – reads: “Can @Douglas4Moray tell me if he signed off approval for this party tweet today which is about a matter months ago but concerns someone who is currently undergoing treatment for stage 3 cancer?”

An SNP source told The National the tweet was “utterly despicable and lacking in humanity”.

Responding to the outpouring of support, Godley posted a photo of herself, writing: “Thanks to everyone sending me support tonight #ScotTories tweet.”

The photo shows the comic with short hair after she chopped off her long locks ahead of starting chemotherapy.

Godley announced she had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November of last year. She has since had a successful operation and has said she is “on the mend”.

The Scottish Tories have been approached for comment.
