BEING photographed last spring sitting on a giant deck chair beside the Forth Bridge made Willie Rennie look particularly small and insignificant. I noticed his successor as leader of the Liberal Democrats is following in his footsteps and was pictured at the election count with an outsized prop. His blow-up champagne bottle was a perfect visual metaphor for a party with an over-inflated sense of self-importance.

In the coming weeks expect to see this fringe party attempting gain a disproportionate grasp of power with barely a handful of seats by holding major parties with no overall control of councils to ransom.

Let no-one be fooled; in spite of how they name themselves, this is not the action of a democratic party.
