I HAVE no doubt we would comfortably win an independence referendum called now. Our opposition also has no doubt. Which is why they must gleefully be watching some of us suggesting we must put it off till we supply all the answers to all the questions about how we will do the things every country in the world does daily without breaking stride.

This is code for “let’s encourage them to get involved with us in long, countless arguments for months about this, that and the other when we have all the press and all the media and all the money to beat them. Let’s persuade them to give us the time.”

If the recent referendum that resulted in Brexit taught us anything, it is that you win these contests with simple, uncomplicated messages which are readily understood.

Ours is: “We are a clever, industrious and economically viable nation as able as any other of the 195 normal independent countries in the world to run ourselves. Tell us we are not.”
