I AGREE with Ruth Wishart’s exhortation to have our MPs spending more time working at home and advocating for independence (SNP MPs now need to spend more time on the home front, February 24).

Their main effort might not even be in their own constituencies, but rather where the main push is needed. Ruth also urges a shift away from “both votes SNP”, which should now be regarded as having been a mistake.

Coupling this approach with the Long Letter by the Aye Alliance/People’s Alliance that aims to “Max the Yes” vote (also February 24), we need to know how or whether they intend to work with the Scottish Greens to avoid doing damage.

Most important though is the need to see the potential effect of such a shift in second votes in the Scottish Parliament as a whole, using the 2016 data – say 10%, then 20% shift from SNP to Green etc. I’m sure I could have a shot at doing the calculation to satisfy myself, but a professional psephologist is needed to give credibility. Once the principle is clear then we need a plan for each region.
