ALL “renewable power” to your elbow, Lorna Slater, (Independence can deliver low-carbon future, August 16), an excellent article on the Green Party’s forward-thinking policies. Local communities with more say in land usage, energy generation and conservation are vital for success in an independent Scotland.

Turn a page in yesterday’s National and read, “Flagship oilfield is finally on stream”. East of Shetland, the Mariner field is set to produce 300 million barrels over the next 30 years. Read an excellent summary by David Pratt: “Authoritarian rule is spreading across the world-it could all end in violence”. Charisma, corruption and megalomania has concentrated an even more dangerous form of power into a handful of world leaders, and start thinking – Thatcher, the Falklands, Blair and Iraq. Is there another set of the same style of leadership running No-Deal Brexit and aiming to “make Britain Great Again”, plus a heap of loot for themselves of course?

Scotland, by whatever means, must act fast before circumstances make the grip too tight.
