LA Revue Écossaise – Scotland’s only French-language magazine – has launched a crowdfunder for its second issue.

Founded in November 2022, the biannual publication tackles Scottish politics, culture, history, ideas, and travel in French.

The first issue explored the theme of "what brings us together", with the second issue now delving into how Scotland takes the lead in the scientific scene, what innovations have emerged and what the future holds.

Journalist Assa Samaké-Roman, a columnist at The National and the magazine's editor, said: “La Revue Écossaise seeks to foster a deeper understanding of Scotland and its contributions, encouraging readers to contemplate its rich history, cultural tapestry, and future potential - and most importantly, to start conversations about where the world is heading.

“It is fitting that our second issue revolves around the theme of "L'Écosse Laboratoire" (Scotland as a Laboratory).

“Our goal is to delve into the inventiveness and creativity of Scotland, shining a spotlight on how its ground-breaking ideas have helped shape our world and how they can guide us in tackling the challenges of the future such as the climate emergency and social exclusion.

“Within the pages of this issue, you will find stories that go beyond the surface, exploring the vibrant tapestry of Scotland's creativity, ingenuity, and forward-thinking spirit. We aim to inspire and provoke thought, offering a platform for diverse perspectives and voices."

She added: “As an independent, ad-free publication, we are operating in a challenging environment. The cost of printing the magazine has doubled since last year. But despite these obstacles, we're determined to uphold our values.

“We want to pay all those who work with us fairly and keep the production of our magazine in France, where most of our readers are, even if it's more costly than outsourcing elsewhere.

“It's crucial for us to maintain the quality of our work. We are also choosing not to compensate the founding team's efforts for now.”
