I ENJOYED Kevin Mckenna’s article “Selling the royal myth: the BBC and the dysfunctional House of Windsor” (March 10), particularly his humorous introduction where he describes the time he met the Queen when she was wearing an outfit of green, white and gold, and his suggestion that she may have an affinity with a certain Glasgow football club.

Kevin is not alone amongst Celtic fans in describing the colours of the Irish tricolour as green, white and gold. In fact, as I’m sure he knows, they are green, white and orange. I have suggested to many Celtic fans that as the tricolour seems to be the official club flag, perhaps the club could have an orange “away” kit. The suggestion was not received positively.

I have also suggested to Rangers fans that as Rangers is a Glasgow club and “Glasgow” translates in Gaelic to “Dear green place” (approximately), Rangers should find some way of incorporating green into their playing kit. The suggestion was not received positively.

I live in hope that one day both clubs will make such a gesture – but I’m not holding my breath.
