JAMES Dornan’s comment piece (Independence cannot be our priority for now, The National, May 20) deserves a counter-argument. Having been told earlier by Theresa May that “now is no the time” for a referendum because of Brexit, Mr Dorman now tells us that “now is not the time” because of coronavirus.

No doubt, after the lockdown, there will be something else to potentially stand in the way of campaigning for independence. If we wait for some ideal time when there are no other concerns to distract us, we will wait forever.

Those of us who want to see independence in our lifetime must realise this. The coronavirus lockdown has not stopped the trade union movement from their campaigns, rather it has expanded them. The independence movement must follow in the steps of the trade unions, for much the same reasons.
