WHAT a great achievement by Glasgow City, making the last eight of the Uefa Women’s Champions League after an inspirational and tension-filled night that ended with a penalty shoot-out.

Lee Alexander was the hero for her impressive goalkeeping. However, every one of the players, the backroom staff and of course the founders of the club Laura Montgomery and Carol Anne Stewart, also share in the accolades.

The draw for the quarter-final will be made on Friday and amongst the potential opponents are Arsenal, Bayern Frauen and PSG Feminines. Keep your eyes open for the home game and get along and give your support.

Also on Friday, we will see the great and good of women in sport gather for The Scottish Women in Sport (SW/S) sixth annual awards dinner, which is once again supported by University West of the Scotland and a host of category sponsors. We have really pulled out the stops this year as we have two very special guests in the shape of Judy Murray and Catriona Matthew, both of them no stranger to awards.

We have a couple of new categories being presented on the night: Innovation in Sport and Champion School. As always, one of the highlights is the Inspiration in Sport award. This year the judging panel consists of representatives from our category sponsors. It has to be said that all categories were challenging, but the Inspiration in Sport proved extremely difficult.

Our top three were from football, golf and swimming. Gillian Duffy, battled various health issues before being diagnosed with myeloid leukaemia last year and receiving a bone marrow transplant and a new blood system – yet she still takes an active part in schools football. Heather MacRae, 35, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in March and still continued with her IWD Day golf for women and girls the next day.

Last, but not least, the inspirational Cerys McCrindle, who swims for GB Downs Syndrome and is picking up medals left right and centre. In her submission it was said “it’s all about her ability, not her disability’ – you can’t argue with that!
