THE latest ignominious debacle involving Scotland’s football team was bad enough but your report (March 22) did little to improve my humour.
I refer to the post-match analysis when manager Alex McLeish, in an apparent criticism of our poor work rate, stated that we lacked ... “a famous trait for British teams”.
This statement brought to mind Mr McLeish’s conduct in 2014 when he “came out” as a staunch Unionist , strongly urging a No vote, suggesting to me that he takes the view Scotland is in fact an Anglo-British region. This Britnat opinion is seemingly also prevalent amongst many of our top athletes who sup at the trough of British government funding and make no secret of the fact that they believe turning out for “Team GB” represents the absolute zenith of all things sporting.
However, returning to McLeish’s statement, I take a crumb of solace from the suggestion that it was not Scotland which was gubbed 3-0 by lowly Kazakhstan but actually some hopeless British outfit.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
