AN independent Scotland with a progressive government of whichever colour could be pivotal within the European Union. There has always been a trading bond between Scotland and Europe, long before the EU existed. The Scottish Government’s voice has been the only part of the UK’s so-called union of nations that has made sense, and that will not be lost on EU leaders.
Scotland has gained a great deal of respect in its reasoned arguments from the First Minister and SNP MPs in Westminster over Brexit. Many countries within the EU will look to Scotland’s progressive policies as an alternative to the right-wing populist movements that are a threat to us all.
Scotland has a great deal to offer Europeans in many ways, but there would also be many benefits to Scotland as well.
A free Scotland would value people from all nations, including England. There is already a quiet exodus from there to Scotland and they are most welcome. The white cliffs of Dover mentality doesn’t exist here thank goodness. Let’s hope we are not going to suffer the same Brexit nightmare that’s waiting for England.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
