EDWARD Freeman’s remarks on your website about changing the attitudes of Scottish conservatives towards independence chimed with something a wavering Unionist said to me over the festive season.

He said he had been surprised at how many people in the middle-class business community were now openly talking of independence as a possible alternative to leaving the EU. All they want, apparently, to change their spots and their votes, is to be presented with a reasonable economic case for Scotland.

Well, that is not very difficult, especially when one considers the alternative!

I find this development remarkable and possibly a sign of long overdue sense being displayed by what have long been intransigent opponents of independence. Of course such people always have a keen appreciation of which side their bread is buttered.

Nevertheless, those of us driven more by a sense of identity should certainly welcome them inside the tent. For once truly converted, they will have much to offer.
