The National:

ONE person has so far died, more have been injured and thousands have been left without power.

The Met Office has issued two ultra-rare “red” weather warnings as Storm Eunice batters the UK.

It’s one of Britain's worst storms in a generation, and as a result, millions of people have been advised to stay home for their own safety.

But luckily, amid the wind and rain, one man has risen to take a valiant stance against ... the weather?

Apparently so, and this hero comes in the form of arch-Unionist Neil Oliver, who is not happy that people are "giving in" to the storm.

After all, this isn't what Britain fought a world war for, is it? At least, according to former MP and now Sputnik host George Galloway, who tweeted that he was "out and about Eunice".

"Because we live in Britain," Galloway proclaimed. "Because we have children to take to school, business to attend to, work to do. And because our parents faced the Blitz."

Oliver replied to the tweet, saying: "That's the spirit" – despite guidance by experts that the storm poses a real danger to millions across the UK. But what do those pesky experts know?

Oliver isn't happy that some are being advised to stay indoors – as you'll know fine well from his comments on the Covid lockdown.

The historian who is not a historian tweeted: “I see the weather is the latest thing we’re being advised to give in to without so much as a sigh.”

People were quick to take Neil to task over the tweet, with one person accusing the broadcaster of “trying to culture war the sodding weather”.

Education journalist James McEnaney asked: “How fragile do you need to be to see a storm as some sort of test of your masculinity?”

Emma Kennedy said what many were thinking when she asked: "What the hell even is this? Storms aren’t real?"

And writer Jenny Constable pointed out that there isn't actually a government mandate to stop anyone going outside – it's simply advice for your own safety.

She said: "Guys, no one is stopping you from going outside. It’s not government control. you can still exercise your civic liberties to go outside and dodge wheelie bins as much as you want."

One person pointed out that the storm is causing real destruction in parts of the UK, showing a picture of an arena ripped apart by the potentially record-breaking winds.

While dramatist Dan Rebellato joked: "I, Neil Oliver. here and now CHALLENGE Hurricane Eunice to a fist fight on the 2nd floor of the Dundasvale Car Park, Glasgow G4. FREEDOM WILL BE DEFENDED."

And author Caitlin Moran simply replied: "Alright, Canute."

It's important to remember that Neil Oliver isn't actually a historian and he definitely isn't a meteorologist so, maybe listen to the experts on this one – even if some would rather you didn't. And stay safe during Storm Eunice.
