ON Sunday night the BBC news announcer talked about Holyrood, only he pronounced it “Holy” not “Holly”.

The 6am news on Radio 4 on Monday mentioned that the Royal party would be following today’s cortege on the Royal Mile from Holyrood DOWN to St Giles. The 7am news repeated the same geographical canard.

It would be understandable if Australians and New Zealanders and others from the Antipodes subconsciously got Edinburgh upside down, but one could reasonably expect our main national news provider to have got it right.

Any Chinese or Japanese visitor would have been able to tell them that it is a bit of a slog from Holyrood UP to St Giles – which incidentally was once upon a time a “cathedral” as the BBC claimed but is no longer and is now called a “High Church”.

“Could have done better”!
