Former Bromac Kelburne striker Kenny Bain will become the first Scot to play in the lucrative Hockey India League at the start of next year after he signed up for Uttar Pradesh Wizards for a fee of $17,000 at a player auction yesterday.

The 25-year-old was given a base price tag of $10,000 but his growing international reputation helped to raise the Wizards' bid by a further $7,000.

"After a great start to my Amsterdam career it was amazing to be selected for the Hockey India League," said a delighted Bain.

Bain left Kelburne to play for Dutch side Hurley several years ago, but this season signed for top side Amsterdam and scored in a winning debut last weekend. He will also travel to Hamburg next month when Amsterdam take on St Germain (France) and Pomorzanin Torun (Poland) in the opening rounds of the prestigious EuroLeague.

Bain, a veteran of 142 international caps and 57 goals, played for Scotland in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and also the recent European Nations Championships 1 in Prague where he scored seven goals and was voted player of the tournament.
