Former Rangers No.2 Dave Vos has been backed to become the new manager of Ajax by Giovanni van Bronckhorst after he revealed he once spent over an hour debating when the best time would be to introduce Scott Arfield as a sub.
Vos will be promoted from Jong Ajax manager to first-team coach with the full squad next season. The fallen Amsterdam giants are looking for a new boss with current interim manager John van 't Schip set to be moved upstairs.
But ex-Rangers boss van Bronckhorst believes 40-year-old Vos could be ready to not just coach, but take charge of Ajax after being impressed by him when he was his assistant at Rangers.
He said: "I immediately had a good feeling with Dave. We first talked a lot about football and how he saw things. I got to know him well as a coach and as a person.
"I think us reaching the Europa League Final with Rangers really encouraged Dave about being a manager and it's clear that's where his ambition lies.
"At Rangers, he was responsible for the analysis of the opponent. He really got to the bottom of the Europa League opponents and worked out everything in detail. Where our chances lay and where the danger lay. He did that in all matches. The experience at Rangers in the Europa League and Champions League has helped him in its development.
"I once spent an hour and a half discussing with him about when Scott Arfield should come in as a substitute and who he should pass to when he came on! That's how committed he was to preparing us as accurately as possible.
"Only time will tell whether his dream comes true and where his ceiling lies. He always has to raise the bar."

Vos admitted his time at Rangers helped him be promoted to his new role at Ajax.
He said: "I have been a coach for almost twenty years. I took a different route than others who come from professional football.
"At Rangers, we reached the Europa League Final and won the Scottish Cup.
"That gave me the taste of it and it's clear my ambition is to one day manage in the Johan Cruyff Arena."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
