RANGERS are on the lookout for a new manager after dismissing Giovanni van Bronckhorst from his position this week.

The Dutchman – a former player at Ibrox – was appointed as Steven Gerrard’s successor a year ago and led the club to the Europa League final and a first Scottish Cup triumph in 13 years at the end of his first campaign in charge.

However, he has paid the price for a poor start to the current season in which Rangers endured humiliating Champions League group stage and fell nine points adrift of city rivals Celtic at the top of the cinch Premiership.

Some have felt sympathy towards Van Bronckhorst's sacking and have looked to the Ibrox board for answers.

Rangers managers appointed under current regime 

Stuart McCall (March 11 2015 – June 15 2015)

Days in job: 95 days.

Honours: No honours.

During his tenure, Stuart McCall finished third in the 2014/15 Scottish Championship campaign. The Ibrox club then navigated their way into the Premiership play-off against McCall’s former side Motherwell, where they were beaten 6-1 on aggregate. McCall insisted after the defeat that he wanted to continue in the position after completing a “decent job”. He was not granted his wish though.

Mark Warburton (June 15 2015 – February 10 2017)

Days in job: 1 year 240 days.

Honours: Championship title (2016), Challenge Cup (2016).

Mark Warburton delivered the Scottish Championship league and Challenge Cup double during his stint as manager. His side also defeated Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final before going on to be defeated by Hibernian in the final. A poor start to life  in the Premiership meant Celtic moved 19 points clear at the turn of the year. In February Rangers claimed Warburton and his coaching staff resigned from their positions, but the manager claimed otherwise in a radio interview.

Graeme Murty (February 10 2017 – March 11 2017)

Days in job: 30 days.

Honours: No honours.

Graeme Murty was promoted to take charge of Rangers as Warburton departed after having previously guided the club’s development team. His final game in charge was a 1-1 draw away at Celtic, just a day before Pedro Caixinha took over as manager. He then continued his role as youth team coach.  

Pedro Caixinha (March 11 2017 – October 26 2017)

Days in job: 229 days

Honours: No honours.

Portuguese boss Pedro Caixinha was given the nod in March 2017 and was appointed on a three-year deal. He lasted only 229 of the contract and during that time the club endured a record home defeat to Celtic (1-5) and also lost to Aberdeen at Ibrox for the first time in 26 years. After finishing third in the league, Rangers would then suffer an embarrassing European defeat over two legs to Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn. Later that season Caixinha was sacked in October and became the shortest-serving manager in the club’s history.

Graeme Murty (October 26 2017 – May 1 2018)

Days in job: 187 days.

Honours: No honours.

Murty was placed in charge until the end of the 2017/18 season but was then dismissed by Rangers in May following two heavy defeats to Celtic in the cup and in the league. He returned to his youth coaching role, but then left the club completely in November 2021. 

Jimmy Nicholl (May 1 2018 – May 31 2018)

Days in job: 30 days.

Honours: No honours.

Jimmy Nicholl assisted Murty during his time as boss and he was placed in charge following his exit. He was assisted by Jonatan Johansson and the pair led Rangers until the arrival of Steven Gerrard in the June.

Steven Gerrard (May 4 2018 – November 11 2021)

Days in job: 3 years, 163 days.

Honours: Premiership title (2021)

Steven Gerrard was handed his first managerial role at Ibrox after coaching in the Liverpool Academy under Jurgen Klopp. He signed a four year contract during that time and won the club their 55th league title, halting Celtic’s quest for 10-in-a-row. Gerrard also guided the club to their first league win over their rivals since 2012. He then departed for the Premier League and joined Aston Villa in November 2021.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst (November 18 2021 – November 21 2022)

Days in job: 1 year 3 days.

Honours: Scottish Cup (2021)

The most recent Rangers manager was appointed 20 years after leaving the club as a player. The Premiership title evaded Van Bronckhorst during his first campaign in charge as Ange Postecoglou turned things around at Celtic. The Dutchman delivered a stunning run to the Europa League final in 2021 and also won the Scottish Cup in the same season. The 2022/23 did not go to plan for Van Bronckhorst and the worst Champions League group stage record ever, coupled with poor league form, meant he was sacked from his position.
