ANGE POSTECOGLOU says that he still expects to strengthen in at least two areas of his team, but he has to be convinced that any potential targets want to play for Celtic before he will bring them to the club.
The Celtic manager was speaking after watching his team blow Wiener Viktoria away by seven goals to nil in the first pre-season friendly of their Austrian training camp, where he confirmed that he is still on the lookout for potential new recruits.
One of those could have been midfielder Vinicius Souza, but as the Lommel man dithers on a move to the Scottish champions, Postecoglou felt the need to underline the desire players must show if they want to come to Celtic.
“I know you guys like to speculate about prime and secondary, but look, I said last year the ones we got we did pretty good getting, and the ones we don’t get are the ones that don’t work out for a number of reasons,” Postecoglou said.
“So, whilst we have an interest in a lot of players, I’ve always said for me there’s got to be certain things that come together for a deal to be done.
“There’s a lot of good players out there. But are they a good fit for our football club? Do they want to be at our football club? If any way along this way I get a sense that doesn’t happen then we’re happy to move on to the next one.
“We don’t have primary targets. We know what we need and we’ve identified some players who potentially could fit in that mould.
“But like I said, we won’t go into that final stage with anyone else at the moment until I’m convinced they’re coming to the football club for the right reasons.
“I still think there are one two areas where we need some more robustness in terms of the squad, just some quality in depth.
“I wouldn’t expect too many but there are still one or two areas I’m looking to strengthen knowing what’s ahead for us.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
