SCOTLAND could play as many as five matches in 14 days after the rearranged World Cup play-off fixtures were confirmed.

The Scottish FA last night announced the postponed play-off semi-final against Ukraine will be played at Hampden on June 1.

Organisers previously pushed back the Qatar 2022 qualifying fixtures due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine after the Russian invasion.

However, it’s now been confirmed the match will go ahead with the winners of the tie going on to play Wales in Cardiff four days later for a spot in the World Cup finals.

A potential hectic international schedule could await Steve Clarke and his squad should they play both the semi-final and finals of the World Cup play-off with three Nations League fixtures also in June.

Scotland will host Armenia in Group B1 on Wednesday, June 8 before travelling to the Republic of Ireland for the second group game on Saturday, June 11.

The return fixture in Armenia is set to be played on Tuesday, June 14 – which could be the fifth match for Scotland in a crucial two-week period.

The final Nations League fixtures – a double header with Ukraine and a Hampden match against Republic of Ireland – will be played in September.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell said: “Firstly, it will be great to be able to welcome Ukraine to Hampden Park in June.

“While, understandably, there will be two sets of competitive players who are committed to taking another step closer to World Cup qualification, we also understand and appreciate the wider context in which the match will take place.

“We have been consistent throughout that postponing the original tie was the right and only thing to do and look forward to hosting Ukraine at Hampden Park in June.”
