FORMER footballer Gary Neville aimed a sly dig at the Prime Minister last night following England’s 2-1 win over Denmark in the Euro semi-finals.

England’s Harry Kane scored a controversial extra-time penalty, taking his team to victory and Sunday’s final against Italy. The Three Lions’ historic win takes them to their first final in a major tournament since 1966.

While Boris Johnson was in attendance at Wembley, Neville made his views about the Tory leader clear.

At the end of the match, commentator Neville took the opportunity to praise England manager Gareth Southgate.

"The standards of leaders in this country in the last couple years has been poor,” Neville told viewers. “And looking at that man there that's everything a leader should be: respectful, humble, telling the truth, genuine.

"He's fantastic Gareth Southgate, he really is unbelievable and has done a great job."

Neville has been regularly political in recent years, saying Westminster leaders are “out of their depth” during the coronavirus pandemic.

The former Manchester United captain also described the Conservative government as the “biggest set of charlatans ever to be elected” in December.
