The National:

YOU had to feel slightly sorry for Boris Johnson.

There was the Prime Minister, laying on a photo opportunity for the cameras to record him watching England beating Germany in the European Championships, when the Twitterati hijacked it all.

The Prime Minister's picture was soon edited, with the the image on the TV screen replaced with mocked up photos of Matt Hancock and his lover, the Teletubbies, and Johnson’s own former paramour – as she alleged – Jennifer Arcuri.

Meanwhile First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s tweeted congratulations to the England team got her pelters from the Daily Express.

The FM tweeted: "Congratulations, England (Still just one team unbeaten by England so far in @EURO2020)" which provoked the Express headline: "Didn't beat us, though! Bitter Sturgeon cannot resist swipe at England after Germany win."

Some of her followers on Twitter got the joke and sided with the FM, but several did criticise her, one writing "what a horrible mentality".

Which begs the question just how are Scotland’s politicians going to react if England actually win the tournament?

Though they are only in the quarter-finals and must beat Ukraine in Rome on Saturday to progress, with both the semi-final and final at Wembley, England’s chances of success are high. They did beat Germany well, even if their opponents were under par.

You can bet that even now some of the FM’s team of advisers are working on how to respond to further English success.

Yes, we know that football should never be taken seriously, but it’s a sad fact that if she congratulates England, a number of Scots will turn against her because they always want to see England beaten.

The prospect of England lifting the cup at Wembley on July 11 is enough to turn some Scottish stomachs, because we know, we just know, how the English media will totally overreact, probably for the next 55 years.

At least we won’t have to watch footage of the 1966 World Cup for ever.

The Jouker suggests the FM will give a dignified congratulations, while Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross will be over the top in his good wishes, as will his Tory sidekick Murdo "Queen’s XI" Fraser.

The Scottish Greens will be nice, and no doubt make a point about how the victory parade should be on an environmentally-friendly bus.

Nobody will give a monkey’s what LibDem leader Willie Rennie says, and Labour branch office manager Anas Sarwar will, as always, say what London head office tells him to say, whether Sir Keir Starmer is in charge or not.

The Jouker thinks England can win but reckons Belgium or Italy might pip them in the final. After extra time and on penalties, of course.
