STEVEN GERRARD has urged Rangers supporters to enjoy trophy day at Ibrox safely as his players prepare to toast a 55th Premiership title.
Captain James Tavernier will be presented with the silverware following the fixture with Aberdeen as Gerrard's side look to become league invincibles and write their names in the history books.
The squad that Gerrard has guided to Rangers' first league title in a decade will be forever revered by supporters following the long and difficult journey back to the top of the Scottish game.
And he is fully aware of the significance of their achievement this term as a bond has developed between player and fan during a unique but memorable campaign.
Gerrard said: "I don’t think it just happens naturally I think you obviously try to build the right dressing room, not just from a talent point of view you try to put the right people and right personalities and characters in the dressing room.
"I think the players have seen it with their own eyes, the support that the fans have given them not just in the stadium in the previous years.
"We obviously all knew it was going to be a unique year but the players read the news and what goes on.
"They know that we sold an incredible amount of season-tickets. They know that the fans have to pay to watch certain games.
"They have to buy certain memberships. They know how many shirt sales there have been.
"I think there has been a real understanding from the players and we’ve made it abundantly clear what the fans have had to do to support from afar this year.
“The players are family men, a lot of them, so they understand what the fans have gone through to support the team from afar and the players want to share tomorrow even though they can’t be in the stadium with the supporters.
"They want to raise that cup for them because they are the most important people here.”
Rangers came under huge political pressure amidst a barrage of criticism when they clinched the title in March after supporters gathered in significant numbers at Ibrox and George Square to celebrate the league win.
Police and Government figures have warned against a repeat of those scenes and Rangers this week reminded fans of the rules and guidelines in place in the ongoing battle with Coronavirus.
Gerrard said: "My message for the fans would be that obviously the police and the government have put statements out and I think it is important that we try and follow them.
"I want them to enjoy themselves and obviously things have changed from the last time in March.
"You are actually allowed to come out now, but it is important that they remain safe, follow the rules and the distance, but certainly enjoy the occasion.
"This is a significant moment in the club’s history and I want them to all enjoy themselves."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
