STEVEN GERRARD can hit another magical number as his rampant Rangers side head to Parkhead on Sunday.
Having delivered title number 55 after a 10-year wait for the suffering supporters Gerrard is on target for a huge derby milestone.
Rangers are bidding to win four successive Old Firm clashes – and they’ve only achieved that THREE times since the Second World War.
The dominant side of Scot Symon racked up six in a row across 1963 and 1964. Walter Smith grabbed four on the bounce in 1996 and 1997 on the way to nine titles in a row. Then he did it again in 2008 – with Adam at the heart of the victories.
The Dundee captain said: “It would be another major achievement for Steven Gerrard and another milestone.
“If you look at the mindset they’ve had since the start of the season it’s been so impressive.
“Look at what Rangers have done so far and they’ve also got one foot in the last eight of the Europa League so there could be even more to come.
“On Old Firm day, form can go out the window and it’s about who turns up on the day and who wants it the most.
“But at the moment Rangers are most definitely turning up. Rangers have an advantage over Celtic with the intensity they want to play at.
“And they have a structure and formation that has been put in place by the manager and Michael Beale that’s working so well.
“Just look at how they have been performing in Europe and when you do as well as they have done then they take that into league games.
“I look at Rangers now and the mentality of the players and they will be so determined to make it four in a row.
“To do that would be something to be proud of and I’ve no doubt it will drive these players on.
“It will be another target for these players who have already hit the ultimate target of winning the league.
“If you look at them, OK they’ve been hit by two Covid issues, but overall, they have not had a lot of difficult stuff to deal with.
“They handled the Morelos transfer talk and then when there some interest from Leeds in Ryan Kent they batted that away. It didn’t linger.
“He made it clear that he wanted to stay so there were no interruptions.
“But across the city at Celtic there were four or five players who were unhappy and wanted to move.
“That hung over them until January so there was not a lot of clarity about what was going on.
Adam played in all four straight wins back in 2006/07 and 2007/08.
Ugo Ehiogu famously scored with an outrageous overhead kick in a 1-0 win at Parkhead in March 2006. Kris Boyd netted his only Old Firm goal and Adam fooled Artur Boruc with a free kick under the wall at Ibrox two months later.
Nacho Novo grabbed two and Barry Ferguson the other in a 3-0 win in October 2007 with Kevin Thomson the unlikely derby winner in March 2008.
After such a miserable and tumultuous campaign, he knows Celtic will be fired up but he can’t see past a win for his old club this Sunday.
Adam added: “I have no doubt that Celtic will be desperate to win this game after what’s gone on this season.
“But Rangers will have the same determination to improve upon their domination.
“They’ll want the bragging rights because there’s no better feeling than winning an Old Firm game.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
