St Mirren were the victors at Parkhead last month when Kristian Dennis and Ilkay Durmus scored to give their side a famous victory at Parkhead. With a top-six finish a real possibility this year, spirits are high at the SMISA stadium.

Lennon was full of praise for his side after they beat Motherwell on Saturday – but according to McAvennie the fact is Motherwell were inches away from taking a point back to Lanarkshire.

And he knows that despite Celtic’s obvious quality, St Mirren are the side in the ascendancy at the moment and could well win again when the two teams meet tomorrow.

The National:

Speaking exclusively to the Scottish Sun, McAvennie said: "I think St Mirren are on the up and Celtic are still in disarray.

"Lennon can say whatever he likes, but the fact is that Motherwell nearly got a draw at the weekend and they would've if it wasn't for Laxalt.

"St Mirren are on the ascendency as they're playing well and must be full of confidence. That's something that's lacking with Celtic clearly.

"Nobody could argue with that fact that Celtic have better players individually, but they've not been showing it. They've been playing for themselves and you can't do that - you've got to play as a team.

"St Mirren are playing as a team and Celtic aren't, so it's going to be fascinating.

"Put it this way I wouldn't be surprised. The last time at Celtic Park was a shock. It was a coupon buster. Nobody would be surprised if they did it again.

"The boy Welsh has done alright since coming in for Lenny. They're finding a little bit of consistency with him and Ajer.

"But you look at the back four and there's no world beaters - St Mirren can get at them."

"I'm expecting Celtic to beat them because they simply cannot have any more failures. I'd imagine they'll get their act together, but it won't be a surprise if St Mirren do manage the double."
