A SCOTTISH Premiership game has been cancelled just hours from kick off due to a Covid-19 outbreak.
St Mirren have confirmed their game this afternoon against Motherwell will no longer go ahead.
The Paisley club have been hit by a number of Covid cases this week and earlier today revealed a further first-team player has returned a positive test.
In line with Public Health guidelines, several additional squad members have been placed into quarantine.
St Mirren Chief Executive, Tony Fitzpatrick, said : "It is very disappointing that we are faced with this situation despite the numerous precautions and safeguards that are in place within the Club.
"As a result we regret this has caused our game against Motherwell to be postponed.
"This is hugely frustrating for our fans, the players and staff, and for everyone connected with the club. We will be working with the SPFL and relevant health authorities on this matter and will provide an appropriate update when more information is available.
"This once again underlines the absolute necessity of maintaining vigilance to ensure that players, officials and their families minimise the risk of infection to keep everyone safe.”
In a statement, Motherwell added: "St Mirren have told the league that, due to a number of positive tests for Covid-19 amongst their playing squad and coaching staff, they have only 12 registered fit players, including four goalkeepers, available the match.
"We will await further guidance from the league."
It remains unclear at this time whether or not the points will be awarded to the visitors.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
