STEVEN GERRARD insists Rangers will be Europa League underdogs when they face Galatasaray without the backing of the Ibrox crowd next week.
The Light Blues booked their place in the play-off round with a terrific 4-0 win over Willem II last night as James Tavernier, Ryan Kent, Filip Helander and Connor Goldson found the target.
Rangers are now just 90 minutes away from a third successive appearance in the group stages but face an ominous task against the Turkish giants if they are to achieve that aim.
The Gers will have home advantage for the one-leg shoot-out but Gerrard knows his side will have to be at their best if they are to clinch group stage football once again.
Gerrard said: "Listen, we will certainly take confidence from tonight and tap into our results from the last couple of years.
"But, let’s have it right, Galatasaray are a big club, a massive team and they are certainly coming to Ibrox as favourites, for sure.
"It is very frustrating, obviously, not to have our full house and that atmosphere behind us that would give us some kind of advantage.
"But I think it is going to be a really tough game without that there. The players deserve the opportunity and we will give it everything that we have got.
"We have got a tough fixture before that at Motherwell that we need to go and win and then we will certainly look forward to next week. We will enjoy this result here.
"There is still a lot of hard work to do to achieve that and we still have to get over a massive hurdle. It is a game we are looking forward to and we will commit and apply ourselves as best we can to try and get the best result.
"But we can’t think about that achievement until we go and put a performance in. If we put a performance in, it will give us a fighting chance."
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
