NIKOLA KATIC insists Rangers still believe they can win the Premiership title after ensuring they didn’t lose more ground to Celtic at the top of the table.
Steven Gerrard’s side saw off Livingston at Ibrox thanks to Scott Arfield’s fourth goal in three games and are ten points adrift of their Old Firm rivals in the top flight race.
The defeats to Hearts and Kilmarnock and draw with Aberdeen in recent weeks could well cost Rangers the chance to overhaul Neil Lennon’s side this term.
But Katic is confident this Ibrox victory can be the starting point for another extended winning run that could keep alive their silverware ambitions.
He said: “It’s important we responded with a win. Hopefully this is the start of some good form for us and we have to go step by step again. Try to win every game because nothing is done.
“There’s a lot of games until the end of the season so we have to believe.
“There are three more months to play, we have to face Celtic twice and this team will not give up, we will give everything until the last game and try to close the gap.
“I think we showed in the first part of the year that we can play good football and be relentless and score a lot of goals.
“That was the real Rangers although just now we have not been playing like the fans and a club like this deserve.
“We will move forward, working hard every day and we will get back to the place we have to be.
“I have no idea why we are not playing so well. It’s just happened. But we have to be honest, we lost to Killie and Hearts but with our quality and the players we have then I think we should be winning those games.”
Rangers have struggled to produce performances and earn results since returning from their winter break in Dubai and Celtic are now very much in the driving seat in the title race.
Gerrard has been critical of his players for the way they have reacted in certain situations in recent weeks but this well-deserved win was a small step in the right direction.
And Katic knows the Gers have to handle the pressure and expectations from a demanding support in the final weeks of the campaign.
He said: “People talk too much about Dubai. We worked so hard there.
“I don’t know what’s happened. Maybe people are not mentally in the right place, because it is difficult.
“Even today, when we face a team in a low block it is difficult to score in these conditions. But we try and keep working and hopefully we’ll get back to the right place.
“I mean as a team. It is frustrating and the 50,000 people who come here don’t deserve the performances we have put in over the past few weeks.
“Sometimes it is difficult because you don’t want to hear people shouting at you from the stand, we want people behind us.
“But we understand them, because we know what we have to do – and what results this club and these fans deserve.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
