GARY McAllister said last night that he and the rest of the club’s backroom staff will work with Ryan Kent to make sure the winger’s £7m price tag isn’t weighing too heavily on his mind.
After a promising Europa League outing against Feyenoord in Rotterdam, the former Liverpool man has failed to sparkle in back-to-back big matches against Celtic and Young Boys and the Rangers assistant manager reckons it could just be a case of him feeling he has to do too much to justify his whopping transfer fee.
“It might just be a case of resetting his mind,” said McAllister of a player who has scored three goals in 13 matches since his return ahead of this lunchtime's meeting with Motherwell at Fir Park. “He’s got loads of allies here, loads of guys who have worked at him since he was small.
“They know him far more than I know him, but that’s something we’ve got to take on board.
“Sometimes players go away and reflect and think that’s their job but it’s up to us as a staff and a management group to tell him it’s a team game, it’s not all about one or two individuals.
“He’s got a massive part to play and is a player who demands are put on, because we know his levels. But he cannot be carrying everything and we’ll get rid of that. We like to encourage them to have those moments but ultimately it’s a team game.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
Callum Baird, Editor of The National
