CAN I, as a resident of the Dunblane area, send our wholehearted congratulations to Andy Murray on the occasion of his win at the European Open at Antwerp on Sunday (Overjoyed Murray hails one of his biggest wins to crown comeback, October 21)?

To have achieved this so soon after serious operations to cure his hip problems, when it had seemed he might not play at this level again, is extremely satisfying for all of us watching the continued success of one who many of us consider to be our most successful Scottish sportsman. We must also wish him and wife Kim all the very best for the imminent birth of their third child.

One of the most striking and pleasing aspects of watching the end of the match on Sunday was the picture of the two contestants of the game sitting talking and joking with each other after the end of the contest. That is surely the spirit of respect and friendship which all peoples should show each other at the end of the day when the heat of an argument has died down. We can all learn a lot from that.

Well done Andy.
