Glasgow City founder Laura Montgomery admits that by reaching the last 16 of the Women's Champions League, her team are punching above their weight.

But that does not dampen her ambitions to go further in the competition and while she admits reaching the quarter-finals for only the second time in the club's history will take an almighty effort, she is optimistic that it is within her team's capabilities to continue in the competition.

This evening, Glasgow City take on Danish side Brondby with the first leg away from home before the second leg in Glasgow in a fortnight. And while as the seeded team, the Danes are favourites, Montgomery has every faith in her players.

"The last 16 is so tough because the budgets of the other teams are just astronomical," said Montgomery.

"There was some real big hitters in there and while we haven’t ever beaten a Danish side before, we think Brondby are well within our reach. It’s a tie we definitely think we can be competitive in so hopefully we can get a good result over there and bring that back home\."

Glasgow City remain a club with only part-time players and so attempting to compete with fully professional clubs is a struggle. The differential in budgets is astronomical and Montgomery knows that if her players can overcome that, it would be a quite remarkable achievement.

"For a Scottish team to even get to the last 32 is pretty good. By us getting to the last 16, we’re probably punching above our weight," she said.

"At this stage, you’re playing against teams with budgets of £10 million which is just a different world.

"But having said all of that, we definitely have a chance and if we did get to the quarter-finals, it would be utterly amazing and well beyond what we should be achieving."
