LIAM Palmer has claimed his Sheffield Wednesday team mate Steven Fletcher is in the best form of his career - and expressed hope the striker will make a Scotland comeback if the national team reach the Euro 2020 finals.

Fletcher, who has scored 10 goals in 33 international appearances, has netted five goals for Wednesday in the Championship in England this season.

The 32-year-old won’t be involved in the Group I double header against Russia and San Marino this week because he has an ankle problem that limits how many competitive games he is able to play.

However, Palmer is optimistic the man who scored a vital goal in the Nations League win against Albania last November to help Scotland clinch a play-off spot will be fit enough to feature for his country again in future – possibly even in the Euro 2020 finals next summer.

“Fletch is doing great,” he said. “He’s struggling with his ankle at the moment, but he’s working hard. He is always in the gym and is obsessed with trying to get himself right to play as many games as possible. He’s even bigger now!

“It’s difficult because we rely on him so much as that target man, the role he did for Scotland.

“I have played with him for four years now and he’s as good as ever, the start he’s made has been excellent. The way he’s performing, he’s been one of our best players.

“Do I think he’ll ever be back involved for Scotland? You’d have to ask him because of his age and stuff. He’s looking at possible future tournaments, whether that’s right for him it’s hard for me to say.

“If we get through the play-offs he might be tempted. He loves playing so it would be great if he went back down that road.”
