DAVID MARSHALL: Nothing he could do with opener as Scotland sliced open on the counter and a decent hand to second couldn’t stop it going in from close range. Third came off underside of bar and fourth was right in the corner. Great save from Mertens, and one of the few to come away from the double-header with any credit. 6

STEPHEN O’DONNELL: The national team’s apparent whipping boy did his best up against the athleticism of Chadli and the runs of De Bruyne in behind him. Far from the worst on the night, though attempt at winning a penalty brought the caution and embarrassment it deserved. 5

CHARLIE MULGREW: Was perhaps Scotland’s top performer on Friday night against Russia but played his part here in some shambolic Scotland defending for the Belgian goals. Insistence on attempting long balls frustrated the crowd. 4

LIAM COOPER: Posted missing at Belgium’s second, then got away with a poor clearance as Tielemans shot wide. Struggled with Lukaku’s physicality. 4

ANDY ROBERTSON: Caught between a rock and a hard place at Belgium’s opener and then didn’t get tight enough to De Bruyne for second. Sloppy in possession and a shadow of the buccaneering full-back Liverpool fans are familiar with. 4

KENNY MCLEAN: Couldn’t get near De Bruyne or Tielemans in the first half as Belgians ran riot. Gave it his all and no shame in his performance, particularly in second half when he got on the ball a bit more. 5

SCOTT MCTOMINAY: Like McLean, couldn’t be faulted for his industry, but his use of the ball could have been better. Picked up a booking for a late tackle, but if anything, wasn’t combative enough at times. 5

CALLUM MCGREGOR: Unfortunate to lose out on a 50/50 for the visitor’s second, but bigger concern for him would be his lack of influence on the game as he tried to cope with threat of Mertens. Was better in second half before being replaced. 5

ROBERT SNODGRASS: Whipped deliveries caused Belgians one or two problems early on and ran his heart out as he tried to at least pose something of a threat. 6

RYAN CHRISTIE: Scotland’s best performer in the night. The Celtic man was the one home player trying to make things happen. Threaded lovely ball in behind as Robertson almost pulled one back. Didn’t always come off for him but didn’t let his head drop. 7

MATT PHILLIPS: West Brom man had thankless task up front on his own, but did at least trouble Courtois with a decent low shot. One or two decent touches, but a lonely figure for the most part. 5
