NEIL Lennon says he is ready to prove Rangers supporters wrong all over again after being appointed as manager of Celtic for a second time.
Lennon, who had been in interim charge of Celtic since the departure of Brendan Rodgers to Leicester City in February, put pen to paper on a 12-month rolling contract on Friday.
And he has warned any Rangers fans who are happy to see their rivals make the appointment they may come to regret it come the end of the season.
“They have been wrong before,” Lennon said. “On numerous occasions. So, hopefully they will be wrong again.
“They have got to try and stop us doing nine or 10 but I can’t comment on what Rangers are going to do or who they are going to recruit.
“We are going try and recruit the best players we can get for the best positions and for the best positions and improve as we go along. And give the squad a lift because it needs a lift. And give the players who have been at it for three seasons now the jag of quality in there that they need.”
Through that recruitment, Lennon believes that he can not only carry on the success that Rodgers had at the club, but actually improve the Celtic team.
“Absolutely [I can improve the team],” he said. If we can. Brendan did the Invincible. That may be repeated but that was the benchmark for Brendan. They have gone and won a treble, [and people say] ‘well they are not as good as last year’. They have gone and won another treble. He set a huge benchmark which I want to follow.
“They’ve achieved some great things. We will look to change things a little bit, obviously. That’s the nature with a new manager but not wholesale changes in terms of the structure or anything that we do.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
