Allan McGregor. Left pawing at thin air from Carlos Bacca’s bolt from the blue inside 45 seconds but once again Rangers were so grateful to have this guy in form. Beat away a Cazorla shot, out quickly to stop Ekambi and wonder save from Funes Mori. 7

James Tavernier First corner was poor but good things started to happen the more he played his natural game, looking to nick the ball high up and get after defenders. Would probably have had a penalty if Arfield hadn’t scored. 7

Joe Worrall First start for the club and not the opening he hoped for, the ball rebounding off him and into Bacca’s path for the opener within 45 seconds. Not close enough to the Spanish front two at times but looks like he will be a danger at set plays and something to build on here. 6

Connor Goldson Also in attendance in the opening seconds but powerless to help. Outjumped by Funes Mori and his chums at defensive set plays early on but showed good leadership in the second period. 6

Borna Barisic Generally found the going tough down the left, getting benefit of the doubt for a handball appeal. Caught out of position then over-pursued as Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal their lead back but good energy levels and lovely delivery for the second equaliser. Off with cramp. 6

Lassana Coulibaly The Mali international got through his usual toil but struggled to make an impact. Little surprised when he was sacrificed to get more attacking creativity on the pitch. 5

Andy Halliday Utilised as the deepest of Rangers’ midfield three, it took him a while to get to grips with the Villarreal midfield but generally came on to a decent game. Plugged in neatly at left back at the death. 6

Scott Arfield Looked to join up with Lafferty as much as possible, but everything was a chore in that midfield for the first hour. Kept at it, though, controlled his finish immaculately for the first equaliser and almost nicking a winner. 7

Kyle Lafferty Started in place of the suspended Morelos but toiled with the offside line and well-marshalled Villareal defensive organisation. Tough sledding holding the ball up but got his reward for a tough night by rolling in a sweet second equaliser. 6

Ryan Kent Quick feet and burst of pace electrified the Rangers attacks when they got him on the ball, even if every lapse of possession was severely punished. Caused Villarreal a problem with his direct running. 7

Daniel Candeias Not his greatest display as he toiled to get on the end of things or deliver quality, but picked out a terrific low centre for Arfield as Rangers briefly had parity back at 1-1. 5

Substitutes

Glenn Middleton (for Coulibaly 70). The youngster was eager to get after his man early on down the left, his run seeing Llambrich booked. Then clever pass to Barisic for the second equaliser. 6

Ross McCrorie (replaced Candeias 76). On to anchor the midfield and cut out a few vital passes. Helped Rangers see things out. 5

Graham Dorrans (on for Barisic 85). The midfielder’s return was a sight to gladden the heart, lovely disguised pass played Arfield in for what was nearly a winner. Booked. 5
