DANNY Wilson, the former Hearts and Rangers centre half who now plays for Colorado Rapids in the United States, is on stand-by for the Scotland game against Mexico a week today, writes Matthew Lindsay.
The national squad’s end-of-season tour of Peru and Mexico has been hit by six call-offs and manager Alex McLeish has been forced to call up four players.
McLeish may need to draft in five-times capped Wilson, who joined MLS club Rapids in January, if he is short of cover following the game in the National Stadium here in Lima on Tuesday evening.
“I think that’s an option for us,” said Scotland coach Peter Grant when asked about the prospect of the 26-year-old joining up with his country.
“We’ll look at it. At this moment in time Johnny Russell is the only one from the MLS who is due to join us. We have Danny Wilson as an option, we are maybe a bit short in the defensive positions.
“That is one we will look at, but we don’t want to bring someone in to stand at the side of the pitch to make up the numbers.”
Meanwhile, Grant has revealed the national squad will sit down and cheer on Liverpool and Scotland left back Andy Robertson in the Champions League final against Real Madrid tonight.
“We will be back from training for that, for sure,” he said. “The boys will all be sitting watching Andy, 100 per cent, because he has a lot of good friends.”
Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
