EDINBURGH have suffered a major setback after learning Scotland stand-off Duncan Weir faces a lengthy lay-off after fracturing his jaw.
The 25-year-old suffered the painful blow during Saturday’s Guinness PRO12 defeat to Munster in Limerick.
He has already undergone surgery but Murrayfield head coach Alan Solomons has been told the former Glasgow playmaker will be out of action for a considerable spell.
Tighthead prop Kevin Bryce is also awaiting scan results after suffering an elbow injury in the same match.
But it is Weir’s injury which will concern Solomons most.
Weir made the move along the M8 this summer, after being frustrated by the good form of Warriors team-mate Finn Russell, as he went in search of the game time which might help him dislodge Russell from Vern Cotter’s Scotland line-up. With the Autumn tests looming at the start of November, he will now be praying he is not ruled out for too long.
An injury update from Edinburgh read: “Stand-off Duncan Weir sustained a fracture to his jaw and underwent surgery the following day at St John’s Hospital in Livingston.
“Weir will face a spell on the sidelines to allow him to recover.
“Tighthead prop Kevin Bryce sustained an injury to his left elbow and awaits a scan to determine the full extent of the injury.”
On a positive point for Solomons, back-rower Nasi Manu and stand-off Jason Tovey have recovered from their recent rib and wrist injuries and have returned to training.
Tighthead prop Simon Berghan is making progress from the foot injury he picked up against Cardiff Blues earlier this month while Scotland loosehead Alasdair Dickinson is expected back next month from the hamstring tear he suffered during the Dark Blues’ summer tour to Japan.
Lock Anton Bresler remains out after groin surgery, as is centre Phil Burleigh following shoulder problems. Wing Will Helu is progressing from a hamstring tear and is set to return in November.
