The National:

WE’VE all had those moments where we want to ground to swallow us up, or that pit of the stomach feeling when you’ve got something important on the horizon and then a real curveball is thrown in the mix.

Politicians are not immune to these moments and while guesting on The National’s Holyrood Weekly podcast, the SNP’s deputy Westminster leader Mhairi Black revealed how she had a pretty major wardrobe malfunction minutes before speaking in a debate.

As she looked back on her time as an MP ahead of stepping down after the election, she remembered a time when as she was preparing to speak in Westminster Hall, the belt broke on her trousers and there was a major panic to try and find a way to make them stay up.

“Literally right before a speech I was in the whip’s office and my belt broke and my trousers would not stay up without a belt,” Black said.

“I knew because I was opening the debate I knew I had about four minutes to try and [sort this out] so I’m there with a stapler trying to do a fold in my trousers.

“Thankfully one of the door keepers came to the rescue with a belt from his locker.

“I think it might have been before one of the Waspi speeches. It was in Westminster Hall I remember because I had to run from the whip’s office to the other side of Parliament holding my trousers. It was a nightmare.”

You can hear the full interview with Mhairi Black on a special edition of the Holyrood Weekly podcast out on Thursday.
