WITH the resignation of Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the world has lost what New Zealand journalist Max Hayton describes as her “leadership, her ability to think on her feet, her intelligence, and above all her kindness, compassion and warmth”.

She saved thousands of lives by launching effective policies during the pandemic which also maintained a strong economy, seen nowadays in low unemployment and low government debt at 31% of GNP.

She had successes in promoting “Net Zero by 2050” and a plan for farmers to reduce emissions in this country where agriculture is king.

She reduced child poverty, increased welfare and the state housing stock, negotiated skilfully to improve relations with China and put New Zealand on the global map.

All in six short years.

Nicola Sturgeon could have managed the same if we had had that extra ingredient in the New Zealand mix – independence. Instead, we have Alister Jack.
