The National:

NICOLA Sturgeon was completely unimpressed as a Tory MSP suggested Brexit has nothing to do with the Scottish Parliament during FMQs.

The First Minister was asked by Stirling MSP Evelyn Tweed whether she thinks Conservatives should reflect on their role in the UK leaving the EU, given its numerous negative consequences.

“Does the FM agree with me that it is time for the Tories to call out Brexit for the act of vandalism that it is?” she asked Sturgeon. “Or acknowledge their role as willing accomplices and the havoc it has wreaked on the lives of the people of this country?”

Heckling could be heard in the background – but what’s new? The Tories can’t control themselves when anything EU-related is mentioned. We might remember all their defences of Brexit …

The First Minister leapt on it as she rose to her feet.

“As Evelyn Tweed was asking that really important question, a member of the Conservative benches – from a sedentary position – was asking ‘what has this got to do with the Scottish Parliament’,” she pointed out.

“The state of the economy, the fact that Brexit has caused a slump in our exports to the EU, the fact that Brexit is making it so much harder to recruit staff into businesses, or into our public services including health, and social care … I’d suggest Presiding Officer that’s got an awful lot to do with the Scottish Parliament.” Exactly.

“Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster. A Tory-imposed disaster,” she went on.

The FM concluded: “It’s time Brexit was reversed … I don’t expect we’re going to get that from the Tories, sadly we no longer hear that commitment from the Labour party. The only route that’s left for Scotland now back into the European Union is by becoming an independent country – and the sooner that happens the better.”

Opposition MSPs could be heard groaning as the First Minister made the statement.

Keep heckling anytime independence is mentioned, guys. You’re helping the case wonderfully.
