DURING this fascinating performance of self-destruction going on at Westminster, a few smaller but significant things may slip by unnoticed.

One that is perhaps worth noticing is the statement from Liz Truss – possibly a soon-to-be Tory leader? – that “the EU has a responsibility to solve the problem of the NI Protocol”.

Why? Was that agreement not negotiated and signed by the Westminster government and touted as a brilliant deal? If they got it wrong, tough! Who should be doing the crawling for concessions?

Let’s put these figures into tables and publish them in The National, and put these tables into leaflets and put them through every letterbox in Scotland.
