WITH recent worldwide, record-breaking, deadly heatwaves and floods making it more and more evident that the warnings of climate scientists are not empty scaremongering, I look around for evidence that humanity is taking climate change seriously.

I see the F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone going ahead, burning an ocean of fossil fuel as a sacrifice to the gods of the internal combustion engine.

I see the aviation industry complaining that they are being “devastated” by travel restrictions at the same time as areas of northern Europe are being literally “devastated” by climate events.

I see the British Government striking a world-beating deal which will mean inferior quality food being shipped 10,000+ miles halfway around the globe, pumping out greenhouse gas all the way.

I expect the COP26 conference to acknowledge that we’re in a hole, and to commit (as usual) to a cessation of digging, but... not just yet.
