I READ Mike Russell’s recent column and there is much I agree with, but the theory he proposes has not always been matched with much in the way of action towards a proper independence campaign.

For example, I recall during the election campaign of 2016, at a meeting in Juniper Green, Edinburgh, Mike was guest speaker. There had been a particularly vicious campaign of Unionist lies and so I asked Mike what was happening about the setting up of a rebuttal team to counter these untruths. I was assured that it was in hand. That was five years ago but as far as I am aware nothing has been done about it. The lies continue unchallenged.

This was long before Covid and, anyway, it is surely possible to have the infrastructure of our next independence referendum up and running with responsibilities already in place. That’s what the SNP is there for.

Surely among more than a hundred MSPs and MPs there are some who can be spared for this. They can’t all be working on Covid and GRA. Surely.
