I’VE been a great fan of The Proclaimers. Their lyrics often reflected my own views and experience of Scotland’s history and culture. After all, what’s not to like? I went to school in Leith; I was born and grew up within walking distance of Easter Road and often walked that walk. The Famous Five are a real memory as well as a legend. I went to Fife to find a wife. As a youngster I even wrote Letters from America.

But I couldn’t bring myself to cast a vote for someone to be allowed to return to a workplace where he has admitted he has behaved inappropriately. Where guidance was reportedly given that he shouldn’t be left alone with female staff members. Our Scottish Parliament should provide a comfortable and safe working environment for all.
I am not a member of any political party but if the price of independence is a vote for a party that ignores the right of people to work free from embarrassment or intimidation in the seat of our democracy, I think that is too high a price to pay. I’m disappointed that the Reid brothers don’t seem to agree with that.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
