AS a reader of The National I reserve my copy at my local store. A task simple enough if it was the Express, The Scotsman or the Scottish Daily Mail. But as it is a independence paper, on a daily basis I’m ridiculed by two ardent Unionist members of staff for buying such a paper.
I would repeat the language used but let’s just say the very sight of the paper gets under their skin. But also do words like freedom of choice, devolution, democracy and self-determination.
I will continue to purchase my copy of the National regardless of others’ political ideologies and beliefs. But knowing I’m also ruffling a few feathers into the bargain is in part its own reward. A complaint to the manager has been made.

I HAD had to double check that I had collected my National yesterday and not a copy of the Sun or the Star. Surely your rather tasteless front page headline regarding the indy support by a “drag” star could have been toned down a bit and relegated to the inner pages?
Whilst recognising independence support is a “broad church”, the main headline should have referred to the easing of restrictions announced on Tuesday.
Once again I must declare no ill will against any individual who supports independence, but surely some more serious thinking is required when thinking of your “ banner” headlines.

Why are you making commenting on The National only available to subscribers?
We know there are thousands of National readers who want to debate, argue and go back and forth in the comments section of our stories. We’ve got the most informed readers in Scotland, asking each other the big questions about the future of our country.
Unfortunately, though, these important debates are being spoiled by a vocal minority of trolls who aren’t really interested in the issues, try to derail the conversations, register under fake names, and post vile abuse.
So that’s why we’ve decided to make the ability to comment only available to our paying subscribers. That way, all the trolls who post abuse on our website will have to pay if they want to join the debate – and risk a permanent ban from the account that they subscribe with.
The conversation will go back to what it should be about – people who care passionately about the issues, but disagree constructively on what we should do about them. Let’s get that debate started!
