WE know that Boris Johnson is cavalier with public money. For example, during his time as London Mayor he bought water cannons that were subsequently sold for scrap at a loss because they are illegal in the UK.

There was the “Garden Bridge”, which cost the public purse £43 million with nothing to show for it. The latter came garnished with the usual Johnson untruth, as he said not a penny from the public purse would be spent on it.

The proposal from his government to transfer staff from the Cabinet Office in London to Glasgow follows this pattern. There will be the cost and disruption of relocating the staff here. Should Scotland achieve independence, then there will be the cost to the Westminster government of transferring its staff back south.
