I SEE Gordon “The Vow” Brown is again advocating reform of the UK Government and this time it’s the unelected House of Lords. However, an elected senate won’t sort the problems that have became endemic in the UK Government system.

Does Gordon Brown not realise that he was in government for a long time and had ample opportunity to resolve these problems, and for some of that period he was the Prime Minister before losing an election? The voters rejected what he had advocated then and have seen through him since.

Calling for reforms to the UK system of government now is far too little and far too late. Everybody in Scotland knows that it is only a ruse by the two main parties to try and stop the SNP and the independence movement. This is something that both the Labour and Tory parties have been doing since Winnie Ewing won the Hamilton by-election in 1967 and it hasn’t worked. All it has done is to see both of them lose votes on a massive scale to the SNP, which they despise. When your tactics don’t work, you change them.

Theresa May set up a body to report on what needed to be done to save the Union when she was the Prime Minister, and Boris Johnson is sitting on it. Why isn’t it being published so we all can discuss it? Maybe it’s something like the McCrone Report and we will get to see it in some 50 or 60 years’ time, when England is a third world country begging for aid from Scotland.

Now we have grovelling Gove chairing a “Special” Union committee, which had Ben Wallace, Kwasi Kwarteng, Liz Truss and the secretaries of state for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (I suppose that we have to give these secretaries of state something to do to justify they defunct roles).

However, nobody from the Scottish Government or the Welsh Senned or the Northern Irish legislature was asked to attend. What daft eejit chairs a meeting of the Union and doesn’t ask the representatives of the various parts of the Union to attend or to put their input? And this is someone who has one eye on the keys to Number 10 Downing Street.

Don’t Gordon Brown, Michael Gove, Boris Johnson et al not realise that tinkering with their precious Union will only cause more problems than it resolves?

• However you set about tinkering with the Union, it won’t get rid of Trident from the Clyde

• It doesn’t create the jobs that have been lost over the last 50 years

• It doesn’t get Scotland back into the EU

• It doesn’t make it any easier to export fresh fish to the EU because of red tape

• It doesn’t help Scottish beef exports to the EU because of red tape

• It won’t stop lorries having to return empty from the EU because of red tape

• It doesn’t stop businesses losing thousands of pounds per day on trade to the EU because of the red tape because of Brexit

• It won’t stop England using Scottish money on vanity projects in and around London

• It won’t stop the English nationalists believing that they were born to rule the world.

What is needed is for Scotland to become totally independent from Westminster and the little England mentality of the Tory party and pseudo Labour politicians who only have eyes on a baronetcy and fancy titles. When we do that, then we can resolve a considerable number of problems created by Westminster and successive governments since the end of World War Two.

To think I once thought that Gordon Brown was one of the good guys (that’s probably a bit of an overstatement – not-so-bad might be more accurate).
