THE attempt by a Cabinet minister to connive at enlisting civil servants – paid for partly by Scotland, together no doubt with the security services – to undermine a party in the 2021 Holyrood election is unacceptable and perhaps unlawful. The Tory authors of such action are desperate to avoid the humiliation coming their way next May.

It is a sure sign that the “Union” is now an illusion.

The expected majority for the independence-supporting parties, and the expected rejection of the Westminster-controlled Tories, will generate more despicable behaviour by Gove et al. They clearly see May 2021 as further determination of Scots to manage the country’s life untrammelled by the unwanted, unhelpful influence of Westminster and of a party with little support in Scotland for 60 years.

It is well beyond belief that Westminster can now convince Scotland that its future prosperity is safe in the hands of any of the former’s power groups.
