NED Larkin of Inverness (Letters, September 23) ended by asking if legal brains within the independence camp can elucidate how Scotland can, as a country and within the constraint of international law, withdraw from the 1707 Treaty of Union and commence self-government.

I wrote to Mr Michael Gove MP at the Cabinet Office and also Mr Douglas Ross MP, leader of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party, at the House of Commons on August 24 asking if they would please explain why it is necessary for the UK Government to give consent if Scotland wishes to resign from the 1707 Treaty of Union.

Needless to say I have not had a reply from either of these MPs.
