GEORGE Kerevan in his latest article seems determined to place as negative a spin as he can on the possible impact of an SNP victory in the Scottish elections next May (Why a big pro-indy vote next year will not get Scotland its referendum, July 20). In so doing he has reached a new low.

He minimises the significance of the growth in support for independence and dismisses the importance of what he describes as “politically centrist Scots”. His arrogance is breathtaking: we ignore the aspirations of our fellow citizens at our peril, whatever the machinations of Westminster.

I want to live in a country which is united, not beset by the divisions which undemocratic government produce. We must build a majority for independence, not rail-road it through. Being convinced of the advantages which self-determination will give us, we should be confident enough to keep persuading people who are undecided that ours is a steady and sure way forward.
