“A BEGGAR hates his benefactor as much as he hates himself for begging”. So opined Oscar Wilde. This sums up the predicament of failed dog food salesman and self-proclaimed economist Kevin Hague (Unionists enlist Brown for No vote fundraiser, January 6).

His begging letter for his fiesta of British Unionist nostalgia was comical.

This smattering of political has-beens and Unionist oddballs shows the absolute paucity of ideas that the Britnats have. The icing on the cake has to be the clunking fist Gordon Brown. No doubt he will deliver another one of his cliche-ridden Stalinist set-pieces. This will be promising “super-duper turbo-charged federalism”.

It’s quite sinister that Hague makes common cause with the Ulster unionists. This is something that they always deny but it’s known they do it. Also Hague is attempting to influence the way history is taught in schools. Presumably this will be a glorification and whitewashing of the crimes of empire.
